New insurer outsourcing report for Europe and Bermuda launched today

Insurance Investment Outsourcing Opportunities - Europe and Bermuda 2022Insurance Risk Data has launched its fourth annual research report on investment outsourcing by insurers across Europe including Switzerland, as well as Bermuda.

At 300 pages long with 127 exhibits, the Insurance Investment Outsourcing Opportunities - Europe and Bermuda 2022 report's analysis is more extensive and it makes even more valuable data available for readers than the 2021 edition.

Data in the research is largely proprietary, and the analysis of it illuminates key 'big picture' themes of outsourcing in Europe and Bermuda, while also allowing granular examination of which chief investment officers are outsourcing, what they want and the reasons why.

The backbone of Insurance Investment Outsourcing Opportunities - Europe and Bermuda 2022 comprises in-depth details of about 2,300 outsourcing mandates in 2020 awarded by around 1,400 insurers to 520 asset managers.

Mandate details revealed in the report include fees, asset classes involved, volumes, terms and conditions, changes in manager and whether the manager is affiliated or independent to the insurer, and details such as general account and unit-linked size of each insurer.

Drawing on all this data the report has, for the first time, ranked all the EEA countries plus the UK and Gibraltar against each other by eight criteria that suggest an attractiveness to asset managers hunting for outsourcing work from insurers. There is data and thorough analysis of the number of insurers, mandates, and breadth of different managers being used, in each country.

Insurance Investment Outsourcing Opportunities - Europe and Bermuda 2022 has also dedicated a long chapter, with about 50 exhibits, dissecting the general account investments of insurers across the EEA, segmented by five general account size bands. This facilitates far more targeted benchmarking by CIOs, and for asset managers to prepare better-informed analysis and discussions with prospects and existing clients. Each cohort's investment pattern is shown in a chart, and analysed in narrative. The chapter also reveals the annual investment risk appetite - again by five general account size cohorts, in France, the UK, Germany and Italy - since 2016. Similar analysis in last year's report means readers have a time series to analyse.

The Insurance Investment Outsourcing Opportunities - Europe and Bermuda 2022 research report examines the topics of ESG investing, and net-zero investing, by insurers in Europe and Bermuda. Two chapters are in-depth interviews with named insurers in the UK and Continent, about how they apply net-zero ambitions to their general accounts, and what they expect when outsourcing net-zero investments.

A further chapter analyses what it takes to 'do' net zero for an insurer, and how it differs, sometimes significantly, from ESG. The chapter also counsels on how non-ESG managers might 'defend' mandates that might be at threat of replacement with ESG engagements – a further trend we identify underway.

Mini case studies analyse key trends in the further evolution, and ongoing strong demand, for outsourcing ESG investing, both in general accounts and unit-linked.

Other valuable features of the report include:

  • Extensive lists of more than 500 investment professionals – CIOs, CFOs, investment committee/board members - at hundreds of insurers in the EEA, Switzerland and Bermuda;
  • Details of 'big picture' trends in outsourcing, from surveying which asset classes CIOs plan investing in, and outsourcing, the most in 2021 and beyond;
  • Investment plans of more than 100 named European insurers, including asset class and return targets, for 2021 and beyond;
  • Insight into what alternatives Bermudian insurers hold – and why 'alts' remain strategic despite volatility from some classes in 2020;
  • Details on the various ways specific Swiss CIOs are cutting the costs of outsourcing, and how to make an engagement resilient to this pressure;
  • Analysis of insurers with mid-sized general accounts hunting worldwide for alternatives managers that run strategies such as direct-lending / mid-market loans, PE/secondaries, infrastructure and more
  • Lists of insurers that lost money by holding cash at banks and are looking to reallocate it

Insurance Investment Outsourcing Opportunities - Europe and Bermuda 2022 is accompanied by a chartbook that contains all the exhibits in the research report, and data behind those exhibits.
